Dr. Mohamed Latheef, President of the Civil Service Commission has said that media is a pillar of a democratic society, but independence is not the only element of the media, in the opening remarks of the Public Service Broadcasting workshop jointly organized by the MNBC and UNESCO.
He also said that the media shoulders a major reasonability in promoting and sustaining a democracy.
Speaking at the ceremony Dr. Latheef said that public broadcasting is a very important element of the media,
Dr. Latheef also said that “media could not only be independent and that is not the only element of the media. But a responsible journalism is also a very important element of media”.
Training of the workshop would be conducted by BBC’s former Executive Editor Phillip Hardy. In his remarks Mr. Hardy said that government has to spend money for the public broadcasting. He also said “MNBC is doing a very important job and that’s to become a perfect public broadcaster and this will open many opportunities. This will bring in so many positive things but this will also bring in new challenges. This change is already happening. The biggest of the challenges would be financing. Public broadcasting needs a lot financing from the state”.
Workshop will be concluded on 29 February according to TVM.
