Former President and DRP leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in his surprise announcement of quitting politics has backed his Deputy Ahmed Thasmeen to become the next leader of the party. Gayoom said he feels Thasmeen who was his running mate in the 2008 presidential election is a good choice to succeed him as DRP leader.
“Thasmeen has done yeomen service to the party and he was my running mate in the presidential election, he will be a good person to be elected to the post, it is my personal feeling” Gayoom said in a TVM live news conference this afternoon. DRP leader however said the decision is in the hands of the delegates of the DRP Congress held next month but gave his full endorsement to Thasmeen.
Gayoom also assured he will support DRP candidate in the presidential election. In an earlier occasion too, Gayoom has praised Thasmeen for his dedication and capabilities, hinting his endorsement to Thasmeen to be the next DRP leader. There have been increasing rumors of splits in the party about Thasmeen taking over leadership.
Those who oppose him say Thasmeen lacks in leadership and administrative caliber while a larger number of members in the DRP believes he is the undisputed next leader of DRP. According to reliable sources, Thasmeen has spent a very large sum of money to bolster the party.
